Detailed description of Marshall Canyon Golf Club

Marshall Canyon Golf Club, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in La Verne, California.

Marshall Canyon first opened for play in 1966.

This is a walkable course that offers a true challenge to men and women, young and old, good golfers and duffers. The greens are an experience in themselves. There are rewards for those who challenge the course and succeed and trouble for those who challenge and fail.

The course plays to 6,145 yards from the blue tees, 5,908 from the white tees, 5,559 yards from the red tees and 4,329 yards from the yellow tees. The longest hole on the course is # 10, a par-5 that plays to 482 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 2, a par-3 that plays to 171 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 5, a 413 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Marshall Canyon Golf Club is # 11, a 177 yard par-3.

I play this course twice a month as part of a LaVerne Senior Group. I help coordinate this group's twice monthly rounds and the people who work in the Pro Shop are very accommodating to our group. We recently went back to Marshall Canyon twice a month because their staff is much easier to work with in setting up tee times for our group than the staff at Mountain Meadows where we were playing once a month in a rotation with Marshall Canyon. The course is not in as good a shape as it was a few years ago. It definitely could use some money invested in it to improve the fairways and, especially, to improve the cart paths which are only around the greens and the tee boxes. I hope that will happen, but I suspect the course will continue to be marginalized due to lack of dollars to improve it as part of the L.A. County Golf Course system.

I would not recommend this course to my worst enemy. Marshall used to be one of the finest courses in the area, but I would now rate it as the worst. To much brown grass on the course, the fairways are in dismal condition, not to mention all of the deer on the course, eating the green grass. The County must decide whether they want a Golf Course here, or a grazing land for the deer. One or the other. We paid $38, and you are saying the price is $21 to $25, including the cart. I think you need to recheck your numbers with the course itself.

The course apears to be in transition, there a lot of building and maintenance work going on. The tees and fairways are poor and this has been this way for a long time. It may have to do with the course being on the side of a hill. The greens are excellant and are the main reason for playing the course. The side hill layout makes you question your eyes when you watch where your putt or chip go. This would be a better course for an experienced golfer. A relatively new golfer would probably not take care of the course the way it should be taken of and not help his/her game. They would probably wonder where the windmills are.

I like the layout and ambiance of this track, but fairway and green conditions are only decent at best. And the pace of play was painfully slow at times. Paid $47 dollars weekend twilight, which is too much considering what else is out there within 20-30 miles of this course. I just couldn't recommend playing this course at the price we paid.

I play this course twice a month with a Senior Group to which I belong and I ranked it over a year ago. I comment about it now because the strong winds that hit the area on November 30 and December 1 uprooted some 20 mature trees, including a very large oak tree. The staff at the course has put in a lot of hours getting the debris cleared away in the past two weeks, but there are still places where debris is on the edge of the fairways. Due to their limited resources, I expect it's going to take awhile before the course is completely cleared of debris. The staff is doing a great job cleaning up the course and I commend them for their diligent work in cleaning up from the windstorm while maintaining tee boxes, fairways and greens that always need attention without having to deal with extra debris on the course. The greens remain a great challenge to putt. When I take only 36 putts a round, I fell I've done well!

We play this course due to the price and quality of the greens and layout. It is a LA County course but in better condition than most of the others. It is a fact that you see deer and maybe a coyote each time you play here. The pace of play is slow unless you play early. I would recommend this course to my friends.

This course is close to home so we play few times a year. Extremely challenging, especially for women. Slow play due to fivesomes and some ravines, difficult greens, and sloping fairways w/lots of trees. But really enjoy the vacation-like feel of the hilly location. Always see lots of deer. Greens are some of the most difficult due to slopes.

I play this course with a group of Seniors every month. I sometimes play it more than once a month. It is a challenge since a ball hit in the wrong place on just about every fairway, and some hit in the middle of the fairway will roll down hill putting one in tree lines on many holes. The greens are a challenge to putt, but a challenge I personally enjoy. My last round had me taking 37 putts. Anything under 40 is a good job with the putter in my opinion and the opinion of most golfers I know who play this course. I generally do not exceed 36 putts on this course and if I'm under 36 putts I feel I've done very well.

This is a LA county course and is heavely played. We play it often for the price, the layout, and the overall condition. Not a country club but a fun course to play. The greens are very good, fast and tough to read. The fairways and rough are okay. Good over all course for the price.

After 20 years I keep coming back. Many people complain about the greens. I'm not talking condition here, but difficulty. You are in a mountainous area and the greens are fast and tough to read. In my opinion, the greens make an average course into an above average. If not for the greens, the course would be boring.

THE RUFF IS MUCH TO LONG FOR A PUBLIC COURSE, TAKES FAR TO LONG TO FIND A BALL JUST OFF THE FAIRWAY, AND THE GREENS ARE THE WORST I HAVE EVER SEEN TO READ.

The course layout on this mountain course is nice, but the greens border on unplayable, not because of their condition, but because of the extreme slopes on most of them. Very difficult to read, wide variations in speed, several unrealistic pin placements. The greens on this course turn what could be a very pleasant round into a very frustrating round.
